What happens when everything seems to go awry?
Last week, we boarded a flight to the West Coast for a special couple’s wedding. Little did we know that we’d be facing what would feel like the longest cross-country flight ever! Our saga included 2 crews, deplaning 3 times, sitting on the tarmac for 8 hours, and arriving 13 hours late. When the first flight was canceled, half the passengers audibly groaned.
By the end of our ordeal, we’d gotten to know the guy sitting in the center seat in our row. As we taxied for our final takeoff, he turned and smiled. “I appreciate you guys staying chill through it all,” he said to us. We laughed. “What’s the alternative?” I wondered aloud.
Maybe that’s the key during chaos. Especially if there’s no action you can take: Chill. Find humor in the moment.
In the end, the travel delay was an inconvenience, yes. But catastrophic? No.
It made a relatable story and was totally worth it. Here in California, we’ve been filled with joy. We celebrated our friends’ nuptials, saw our son, caught up with a colleague at Google, dined with friends and family, and visited the Ritz-Carlton where we’d been married.
But as the saying goes, the best laid plans of mice and men…
Today, we received more tough news.
My dear author friend, whom I’d hoped to meet in-person for the first time, had tested positive for COVID and would have to forgo our book signing.
I let her know that I hoped she would feel better soon and was sad to miss seeing her.
Now what?
The book store, famous Book Passage in the Ferry Building, said they’d love to still host me for an event.
The show will go on!
Please join me. For anyone in the Bay Area, here are the details:
DATE: Wednesday July 3rd
TIME: 5:30-6;30pm PST
PLACE: One Ferry Building 42, San Francisco, CA 94111
Even though she won’t be able to join me in-person, my friend Dallas Woodburn would love for you to check out her latest novel.
Before and After You and Me is a gorgeously crafted story of first loves and first losses, and how we grow from our grief, through vulnerability, time, and creative expression. Woodburn's ingenious use of timelines and her powerful command of details puts her in league with the best of today's contemporary YA authors."

Here’s hoping that we’ll see each other at a book signing here in San Francisco or elsewhere in the future!
As always, I’m wishing you joy, meaning, and orchids,
